Ever Wonder If Your Life Agent Actually Owns The Policy They Sold You ?

Here is a question most people never think to ask their life insurance agent — Do you actually own the policy you are recommending to me ?

It is a fair question. And honestly, it is one of the most important questions you could ever ask.

If an agent would not put their own money into a policy, why should you ?

Agents Should Never Recommend A Policy If They Would Not Own It

That is not just a nice-sounding phrase. That is a standard I have held myself to for over 32 years as an independent broker here in Texas.

I have owned Term Life. I own Permanent Life. And I can tell you exactly what I purchased, why I purchased it, and what it costs me every single month.

That kind of transparency is rare in this industry. Most agents will never have that conversation with you. I will.

My Term Conversion Story — Year 13 of a 20-Year Term

Back in 2012, I was 13 years into a 20-year Term Life policy. Most people would have just let it run out. I did not.

I converted that Term policy into a Guaranteed Permanent Life policy — and it is one of the best financial decisions I have ever made.

Here is why that matters to you. Term conversion is a right built into most Term policies that almost nobody uses. You can convert to permanent coverage without a new medical exam. Your health at the time of conversion does not matter. That is a powerful option that most agents never explain to their clients.

If you own a Term policy right now, you need to understand what your conversion options are before that window closes.

What I Own Today — A 100% Guaranteed Death Benefit IUL

My permanent life insurance is a 100% Guaranteed Death Benefit Indexed Universal Life policy with a level fixed premium.

Let me break that down in plain language.

Guaranteed Death Benefit — My family will receive the full death benefit no matter what. There is no question, no fine print, no "maybe." It is guaranteed.

Indexed Universal Life — The cash value inside my policy has the opportunity to grow based on a market index, but with a floor so I cannot lose money due to market downturns. Growth potential without the downside risk.

Level Fixed Premium — I pay the same amount every single month. It never goes up. I locked in my rate when I was younger and healthier, and that rate is permanent.

I am paying the lowest possible premium each month to guarantee a $1,000,000 Tax-Free Death Benefit — for the rest of my life, until I exit the earth.

That is what smart permanent life insurance looks like.

Critical & Chronic Illness Living Benefits

My policy also includes Critical & Chronic Illness Living Benefits riders.

This means if I am diagnosed with a qualifying critical or chronic illness while I am still living, I could receive a portion of my death benefit while I am still alive to use however I need — medical bills, lost income, home modifications, or anything else.

You do not have to die to use your life insurance. That is a concept most people have never heard, and it changes the entire conversation about what life insurance can do for a family.

100% Return of Premium — In Year 20 or 25

Here is another feature available on my policy that most agents will never mention.

There is a 100% Return of Premium option available at Year 20 or Year 25. That means every dollar I paid in premiums over those years could come back to me — tax-free — if I choose to exercise that option.

Think about that. You could have a $1,000,000 death benefit protecting your family for 20 or 25 years, and then get every premium dollar back. That is not a gimmick. That is a well-designed policy from a top-rated carrier.

There Is Much More We Could Discuss When We Talk

I have only scratched the surface here. The full picture — the carrier, the exact numbers, the riders, the conversion strategy — that is a conversation worth having in person or over the phone.

Every situation is different. Your age, your health, your goals, your budget — all of it shapes what the right policy looks like for you. What I own may not be exactly what you need. But understanding what a 32-year veteran of this industry chose to put his own dollars into is a very smart place to start.

Ask Your Agent This One Question

Before you buy any permanent life insurance policy, ask your agent a simple question:

"Do you own this type of policy yourself ?"

If they hesitate, change the subject, or say no — that tells you something important.

I will never recommend something I would not own. That is not a sales pitch. That is just how I have operated since 1994.
