Living Benefits: Use Your Life Insurance While You're Alive

When most people think about life insurance, they think about the death benefit — the money their family receives when they pass away. But there's a powerful feature in many modern policies that most people don't know about: living benefits.

Living benefit riders allow you to access a portion of your death benefit while you're still alive — if you're diagnosed with a qualifying illness. And in many cases, these riders are included at no additional cost.

The Three Types of Living Benefits

1. Terminal Illness Rider (Accelerated Death Benefit) If you're diagnosed with a terminal illness and have a life expectancy of 12–24 months (depending on the carrier), you can typically access 50–100% of your death benefit immediately.

This money can be used for anything: medical bills, experimental treatments, paying off your mortgage, taking a final family vacation, or simply providing financial security for your spouse.

2. Critical Illness Rider A critical illness rider pays out a lump sum if you're diagnosed with a covered condition, which typically includes:

  • Heart attack
  • Stroke
  • Cancer (most types)
  • Major organ transplant
  • End-stage renal failure
  • Coronary artery bypass surgery

The payout is typically 25–100% of your death benefit, depending on the severity of the diagnosis and the carrier's terms.

3. Chronic Illness Rider A chronic illness rider pays benefits if you become permanently unable to perform 2 of the 6 activities of daily living (bathing, dressing, eating, transferring, toileting, continence) — or if you have a severe cognitive impairment.

This rider essentially gives your life insurance policy a long term care component, providing funds for home health aides, assisted living, or nursing home care.

A Real-World Example

Consider a 52-year-old Houston business owner with a $500,000 term life policy that includes living benefit riders. He's diagnosed with a heart attack and survives, but faces $180,000 in medical bills and months of recovery during which he can't work.

With a critical illness rider, he can access up to $250,000 of his death benefit immediately. He pays his medical bills, covers his business expenses during recovery, and still has $250,000 remaining as a death benefit for his family.

Without the rider, he would have had to drain his savings, take out loans, or declare bankruptcy — while his life insurance policy sat untouched.

Why This Changes Everything

Traditional life insurance only pays when you die. Living benefits transform your policy into a financial safety net for the most financially devastating events in life:

  • A cancer diagnosis that costs $300,000+ to treat
  • A stroke that leaves you unable to work for years
  • A chronic condition that requires ongoing care

The statistics are sobering:

  • 1 in 3 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime
  • Someone in the US has a heart attack every 40 seconds
  • Stroke is the leading cause of long-term disability in America

The odds that you'll need your death benefit before you die are actually quite high.

How to Get Living Benefits

Not all life insurance policies include living benefit riders. When I shop carriers on your behalf, I specifically look for policies that include robust living benefits — ideally at no additional premium.

Some carriers include all three riders (terminal, critical, and chronic illness) at no extra cost. Others charge a small additional premium. A few don't offer them at all.

This is another reason why working with an independent broker matters. I know which carriers offer the best living benefit provisions and can make sure your policy includes this critical protection.

The Bottom Line

Life insurance isn't just for your family after you're gone. With the right living benefit riders, it's a financial safety net you can use during the most difficult moments of your life.

When I review your coverage, I always make sure living benefits are part of the conversation. It's one of the most important — and most overlooked — features in modern life insurance.
