The Smart Way To Buy Life Insurance In 2026 — Why You Need a Local Independent Broker

The life insurance marketplace has changed dramatically. In 2026, you need more than a quote — you need a local independent broker who will coach you through the lowest term rates, the best critical and chronic illness riders, and your conversion options. Glenn Hubbard has been doing exactly that for 33 years.

The Smart Way To Buy Life Insurance In 2026 — Why You Need a Local Independent Broker

The life insurance marketplace in 2026 looks nothing like it did ten years ago.

New carriers have entered the market. Underwriting guidelines have shifted. Critical and chronic illness riders have become more sophisticated — and more important — than most people realize. And the gap between what you can get from a captive agent or an online quote engine versus what a seasoned independent broker can deliver for you has never been wider.

I have spent 33 years coaching clients through what I call The Smart Way to apply for a new life insurance policy. Here is what that means in today's marketplace — and why it matters more in 2026 than ever before.

The Marketplace Has Changed. Most Agents Have Not.

When a client calls a captive agent — someone who works for one company — that agent can only offer what their company sells. When a client goes to an online quote engine, they get a rate and a checkbox. Nobody is coaching them. Nobody is asking the right questions. Nobody is looking out for them.

That is not how I work.

As an independent broker, I compare 20 Major Life Insurance Carriers — all A, A+, and A++ rated — to find the best fit for each client's health history, budget, and goals. No two clients are the same. No two policies should be either.

Step One: An In-Depth Look At The Lowest Term Life Premiums

The first thing I do with every new client is share a Term Life Rate Comparison across 20 major carriers — showing premiums for 20, 25, and 30-year term policies side by side.

Most clients are surprised by what they see. The spread between the highest and lowest premium for the exact same coverage can be significant. And the carrier with the lowest advertised rate is not always the right choice once you factor in your health history and the underwriting guidelines each company uses.

That is the coaching piece that no online tool can replicate. I know which carriers are more favorable for clients with specific health conditions, height and weight considerations, or family history factors. That knowledge — built over 33 years — consistently delivers clients their lowest possible rate.

Step Two: The Best Critical and Chronic Illness Riders

This is where most agents fall short — and where the difference between a good policy and a great policy is made.

Critical illness riders and chronic illness riders are living benefits. They allow a policyholder to access a portion of their death benefit while they are still alive if they are diagnosed with a covered condition — a heart attack, stroke, cancer, or a chronic illness that prevents them from performing basic daily activities.

In 2026, these riders are available on many term policies — but not all carriers offer them, not all riders are created equal, and most agents never bring them up.

I bring them up in every conversation. Because the question is not just "How much coverage do you need?" — it is "What happens to your family if you get sick and can't work?"

A policy with a strong critical and chronic illness rider answers both questions at once.

Step Three: Understanding Your Conversion Options

Here is something almost nobody talks about — and it may be the most important protection you can build into a term policy.

Conversion options give you the right to convert your term policy to a permanent policy in the future — without new medical underwriting. That means if your health declines during your term, you can still lock in permanent coverage at a rate based on your health at the time you originally applied.

Not every carrier offers the same conversion options. Some allow conversion to any permanent product in their portfolio. Others restrict you to a limited selection. Some have conversion windows that close earlier than others.

I review every client's conversion options before we finalize a carrier recommendation. Because the policy you buy today needs to protect you not just now — but in the future, whatever that future looks like.

33 Years of Coaching Clients The Smart Way

I started in this business in 1994. I have worked as an Agent, General Agent, Regional Sales Consultant, Regional Sales Director, Regional VP, FINRA Broker Dealer Manager, and Principal. I have seen every corner of this industry.

What I have learned in 33 years is this: the clients who get the best outcomes are the ones who take the time to have a real conversation with an experienced independent broker before they apply. Not after. Before.

That conversation — what I call The Smart Way — covers your health history, your goals, your budget, your family's needs, and the riders and options that most agents never mention. It takes a little more time upfront. It saves clients thousands of dollars and protects them in ways a quick online quote never could.

The 2026 Marketplace Rewards the Informed Buyer

In 2026, the carriers competing for your business are offering better products than ever. Critical and chronic illness riders have improved. Conversion options have expanded. Rates for healthy applicants are at historic lows.

But navigating all of that on your own — or trusting a captive agent who can only show you one company's products — means leaving money on the table and leaving gaps in your coverage.

You deserve an in-depth look at everything the marketplace has to offer. That is exactly what I provide.
