Term Life Conversion Options: What Your Carrier Won't Tell You
Most term policyowners have no idea their conversion privilege varies wildly by carrier — and that gap could cost them thousands. Here is what to look for before it is too late.
You bought a term life policy years ago. You paid your premiums on time. You assumed that when the time came to convert it to permanent coverage, you would have solid options.
You may be wrong — and the difference between a good conversion privilege and a bad one can be worth thousands of dollars to you and your family.
After 32 years of placing life insurance policies across Texas, I have seen this play out more times than I can count. Policyowners who thought they were protected discover — often at the worst possible moment — that their conversion options are far more limited than they expected.
Here is what you need to know.
What Is a Term Life Conversion Privilege?
Every term life policy includes a conversion privilege — the right to convert your term policy to a permanent policy (whole life or universal life) without proving insurability. That means no new medical exam, no new health questions. You convert at your original health rating, regardless of what has happened to your health since you bought the policy.
That is the theory. The reality is that not all conversion privileges are created equal.
Why the Carrier Matters More Than You Think
The quality of your conversion privilege depends almost entirely on which carrier issued your policy. Two policyowners can hold identical 20-year term policies — same face amount, same premium — and have dramatically different conversion options when the time comes.
Here is what varies:
The permanent products available for conversion. Some carriers offer a full menu of permanent products — whole life, indexed universal life, guaranteed universal life. Others limit you to a single product, often their least competitive option.
The conversion deadline. Most policies allow conversion up to a certain age or within a certain number of years. Some carriers have shortened these windows over time, sometimes without adequate notice to policyowners.
The conversion credit. A handful of carriers offer a conversion credit — a portion of your term premiums applied toward your new permanent policy. Most do not.
Living benefits on the converted policy. This is the one that surprises people most. Some carriers allow you to convert into a permanent policy that includes living benefits riders — accelerated death benefit provisions for critical illness, chronic illness, or terminal illness. Others do not offer these riders at all on converted policies.
The Ohio National, Reliastar, and ING Situation
If you own a term life policy issued by Ohio National Life, Reliastar Life, or ING Life — or a policy that was later acquired by one of these carriers — you need to pay close attention to your conversion options right now.
These carriers have made changes to their product portfolios and conversion menus over the years. In some cases, the permanent products available for conversion are no longer the competitive options they once were. In other cases, policyowners have found that their conversion window is narrower than they assumed.
This does not mean your policy is worthless. It means you need to understand exactly what you have — and whether converting to a new term policy with a carrier that offers advanced conversion options might be worth more to you in the long run.
Advanced Conversion Options: What They Are Worth
When I talk about advanced conversion options, I am referring to conversion privileges that give you access to:
Indexed universal life products. These policies credit interest based on the performance of a market index (typically the S&P 500), with a floor that protects you from market losses. A good IUL with a strong conversion privilege can build significant cash value over time.
Policies with living benefits built in. Some of the best permanent products available today include chronic illness, critical illness, and terminal illness riders at no additional premium. If you are ever diagnosed with a qualifying condition, you can access a portion of your death benefit while you are still alive. This is not a loan — it is an acceleration of your benefit.
Guaranteed conversion credits. A few carriers offer meaningful credits toward your first year's permanent premium when you convert. On a large policy, this can represent real money.
The difference between converting a $500,000 term policy into a strong permanent product versus a weak one — over a 20-year period — can easily exceed $50,000 in cash value and death benefit. That is not a rounding error. That is the difference between a policy that works for your family and one that merely exists.
The Window Closes — And It Does Not Reopen
Here is the part that keeps me up at night on behalf of my clients.
The conversion privilege is a use-it-or-lose-it benefit. Once your conversion window closes — whether because you hit the age limit, the policy term ended, or the carrier changed its rules — you cannot go back. If your health has changed since you bought the policy, you may not be able to qualify for new permanent coverage at any price.
I have sat across the table from people who waited too long. They had a health event — a heart issue, a cancer diagnosis, diabetes — and by the time they came to me, their conversion window had already closed. The option that could have protected them was gone.
Do not let that be your story.
What to Do Right Now
If you own a term life policy — especially one issued more than five years ago — here is what I recommend:
Step 1: Pull out your policy and find the conversion provision. It will be in the policy document itself, usually in the first 10 pages. Look for the conversion deadline (age and/or years remaining) and the list of products available for conversion.
Step 2: Call your carrier and ask specifically what permanent products are available for conversion today. Not what was available when you bought the policy — what is available right now. Carriers change their product menus, and the options may be different from what you expect.
Step 3: Talk to an independent broker before you make any decision. A captive agent works for one carrier. An independent broker works for you. I represent more than 15 carriers, which means I can show you what a new term policy with advanced conversion options looks like compared to what you currently have — and help you decide whether a switch makes sense.
Step 4: Do not wait. If you are in good health right now, you have options. If your health changes, those options narrow or disappear entirely.
A Note on Replacing Your Policy
I want to be clear about something: replacing a life insurance policy is not always the right answer. There are situations where your existing policy is strong and your conversion options are solid. In those cases, I will tell you to keep what you have.
But there are also situations where a new term policy — placed with a carrier that offers genuinely advanced conversion options — is worth far more to you over the long run than the policy you are currently holding. The only way to know which situation you are in is to have someone look at your specific policy and compare it honestly against what is available today.
That is exactly what I do.
The Bottom Line
Your term life policy is not just a death benefit. It is a platform — a foundation that, if structured correctly, can convert into permanent coverage that protects your family, builds cash value, and provides living benefits if your health takes a turn.
But only if you have the right conversion options. And only if you act before the window closes.
If you own a term policy issued by Ohio National, Reliastar, ING, or any carrier you are not certain about — or if you simply want to understand what your conversion options are worth — I am happy to review your policy at no charge.
Thirty-two years in this business has taught me one thing above all else: the policyowners who fare best are the ones who ask questions before they need the answers.
